Graduate Tuition Support
The University of Texas at Arlington has implemented Graduate Tuition Support for Graduate Teaching and Research Assistants (GTAs and GRAs) in all Ph.D.-seeking students and students in three terminal Master’s programs—Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Fine Arts.
Budgeting Requirements
All proposals that include eligible Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) must budget for all tuition and fees.
These costs must be included unless:
- The sponsoring agency explicitly prohibits tuition and fee charges.
- The project is a training grant, in which case tuition and fees should follow the sponsor’s established guidelines.
Charging and Eligibility
- Tuition fellowship amounts for eligible GRAs should be included in externally funded grant and contract budgets where allowable.
- If a grant or contract expires mid-semester, the student remains eligible. Tuition will be charged to the grant in direct proportion to the student’s appointment on the grant account(s) at the time of the tuition expense.
Budget Category and Justification
Tuition and fees should be budgeted under the “Other Costs” category on standard federal forms and excluded from the Facilities & Administrative (F&A) cost base.
Do not include tuition remission under:
- “Tuition”
- “Stipend”
- “Participant Support”
These categories are reserved for other functions or for training grants where tuition is paid by the sponsor regardless of work performed.
Recommended Budget Justification (Other Costs):
“Graduate Research Assistants at The University of Texas at Arlington receive remission of tuition and fees as a benefit of their employment. These costs will be charged in accordance with 2 CFR 200 and are excluded from the facilities and administrative cost base. These costs are expected to increase at the rate of 5 percent per year.”
