Animal welfare regulations require that personnel working with animals are qualified through appropriate training involving the proper handling and care of animals and the regulatory requirements of animal research.

COI disclosures are required for all IACUC researchers, but the COI training is only required for those that have PHS funding. The disclosure is located in Mentis. It must be recertified every year. You can find more information on COI policies here.

Each individual applying to work with animals or requesting access to the Animal Care Facility must complete the following training as well as applicable immunization requirements:

1. ONLINE TRAINING

These online training modules are designed to provide an understanding of animal research regulations and proper care and handling of animals in a research setting.

Required Module:

  • IACUC General Training

Optional Modules:

  • IACUC Surgery Training (required if you will be performing surgery)
  • IACUC Field Training (required for field protocols)

2. HANDS-ON TRAINING

Basic

This training is provided by UTA's Animal Care Facility Manager and is designed to acclimate the individual to the handling of animals and provide training on proper techniques.

After you complete the required training modules and are cleared by the OHS Nurse, you may schedule an appointment for Hands-On Training with the ACF Manager at 817-272-5236 or acf@uta.edu.

Techniques and items covered:

  • Animal facility tour
  • PPE and supplies
  • Emergency procedures and first aid
  • Policies and SOPs, i.e. needle stick policy, occupational safety, etc.
  • Acclimation to animal handling
  • Animal behavior and restraint
  • Reporting animal welfare concerns

Protocol Dependent

When a protocol is submitted, the IACUC Specialist and the Animal Care Facility Manager will review it and create a unique list of training procedures specific to that protocol. This could include techniques such as:

  • Intubation
  • Catheterization
  • Stereotaxic Surgery
  • Breeding
  • Anesthesia/Analgesia
  • Aseptic Surgery
  • Euthanasia
  • Biosafety Level 2
  • Animal Transportation

3. OTHER REQUIRED TRAININGS

You may be requested or required to complete other University training(s) as a condition of your research participation such as Biosafety Level 2, Working with Vaccinia, and Bloodborne Pathogens. The most common is Hazard Communication Training (HazCom). It is a State requirement for HazCom training to be completed by all UT Arlington employees and students who use, handle, or transfer hazardous chemicals at their workplace.
