IRB Training Requirements
For research involving human subjects, you will need to complete UTA's Human Subjects Protection (HSP) Training module. Completion certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of completion.
- Login at https://mentis.uta.edu/public/#trn using your UTA NetID and password
- Locate the 'Human Subjects Protection (HSP)' training which can either be found under 'Completed Training' or 'Available Training'.
- Click on the 'Start' or 'Resume button' to begin the training for the first time.
- If you are renewing your HSP Training, be sure to click 'Retake Training' from the 'Completed Training' menu to ensure your completion is updated in the system.
You will be able to save your progress at any point during the training to resume again later by repeating steps 1-3. Any questions should be directed to Regulatory Services at 817-272-3723 or regulatoryservices@uta.edu.
Transferring to UTA
If you are transferring to UTA, you may submit your CITI Completion Report as documentation of Human Subjects Protection training, provided it was completed within the past three years. Please ensure the training is specifically a Human Subjects Research course covering human subject protections and not the Responsible Conduct of Research course. Acceptable human subjects protection training should include the following modules:
- History and Ethics of Human Subjects Research
- The Federal Regulations
- Basic Institutional Review Board (IRB) Regulations and Review Process
- Informed Consent
- Populations in Research Requiring Additional Considerations and/or Protections
Training Requirements for Investigators:
- All Protocols: Human Subject Protection (HSP) Training (every 3 years)
- PHS Funded (or PHS-Compliant Agency) protocols: COI Training (every 4 years)
- NSF Funded protocol: Responsible Conduct of Research Training (every 4 years)
- Protocol involving Protected Health Information (PHI): HIPAA Training (once)
- Clinical Trial or FDA-Regulated Study: Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Training (every 3 years)

- Sponsored (any source), Greater than Minimal Risk, or Full Board Protocols: Research Conflict of Interest Disclosure (annual)
